Begun in 1974, the Colorado JCI Senate has grown from a small group of Senators
who gathered for friendship and good times to an organization of over
200 members. While friendship is still a main attribute of the
organization, the Colorado JCI Senate has expanded to working with the Colorado Jaycees
by providing support as judges for competitions, serving as trainers,
hosting the OYC/OYF Honoree reception and being mentors for local
Jaycee Chapters.
The Colorado JCI Senate also offers financial support to
local Jaycee chapters through grants for Community Service and
Individual Development projects. A scholarship program, offered in conjunction with the U.S. JCI Senate,
is available to Colorado High School Seniors desiring to continue their
education. More information on our grant and scholarship programs can
be found on our programs page.
In 1999, the Colorado JCI Senate joined with the Colorado Jaycees to form The Jaycees and JCI Senators of Colorado, Inc., a 501(c)(3) foundation. Members in good standing of the Colorado JCI Senate are elected to hold 3 of the Foundation's nine seats on the Board of Directors. One Senator who is an active Jaycee is nominated by the Senate and elected by the Colorado Jaycees. The President of the Colorado JCI Senate also serves on the Foundation board for the length of his or her term of office. All Senators are encouraged to join the foundation.
Beginning in 2000, the Colorado JCI Senate has presented the Jim Cheevers Memorial Award at
the Colorado Jaycees Year End Conference. Following a lenghty bout with
cancer, Jim Cheevers #30596 died shortly after taking office as
President of the Colorado JCI Senate. His key area of emphasis as
Senate President was our Mentoring program, and it seemed fitting to
our Board of Directors to present an award to a Senator that has done
an outstanding job mentoring his or her local Jaycee chapter.
